Selected Biography
Randy Bullerwell was born and raised in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He is a recent newcomer to the field of photography, taking his first introductory workshop with the ever inspiring Margot Metcalfe in 2004.
Living in Head Jeddore he has opened his own gallery in order to spread the word about the therapeutic nature of art in general and photography specifically. Having plans to continue to facilitate and attend photography workshops himself, Randy has an on-going commitment to learning as a photographer through group gatherings, travel, experimentation and having fun!
Artist Statement
Recently I have been blessed with the privilege of visiting a place that was once only a childhood dream-filled world – That of Sable Island.
In recalling a phrase in my favourite book The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery “a matter of consequences” I cannot help but make connections with Sable Island and its present day dilemma. In The Little Prince’s anger during a conversation with the pilot he exclaims:
“You talk just like the grown-ups! ... You mix everything up together...You confuse everything…”
“Is the warfare between the sheep and the flowers not important?...And if I know - I, myself – one flower which is unique in the world, which grows nowhere but on my planet, but which one little sheep can destroy in a single bite some morning, without even noticing what he is doing – Oh! You think that is not important!”
Once on the island it was a time for me to realize the realities of such a delicate environment and it was also an opportune time to aid in giving Sable Island a voice! - I hope my photographs convey a sense of urgency for an island in need of continued sensitive preservation.
